Hi Everyone,

A couple of years ago, I found an old TD134 on Craigslist. These are not very common in the US. I brought it home and started working on it. The base cleaned up nicely with some polish from the boat store. I ordered some mushrooms and motor grommets, and an Ortofon GT cartridge for it. After installing everything, I tried it and it worked. For one side. Then it wouldn't turn anymore unless I waited an hour. Then it would play one side and freeze. So I started the mechanical overhaul of the table. The source of the problem was a cracked motor bushing. After rebuilding the motor and lubricating everything, the turntable works as it should.

Next was the dilemma of keeping it cute, or making it better. I decided to make it better in a reversible way, so I could always return to cuteness. The thin plywood plinth that cane with it had to go. It was causing a booming resonance that I could here in the speakers. It was replaced with a more stout Moldova plinth from Ebay, That helped quite a bit. Next I found a full size platter from a TD135. That turned it into a real tuntable. There was hum and noise I was hearing in the speakers, so next I got rid of the terrible RCA cable and replaces it with new cable with a DIN connector. (My Carad amplifier doesn't have RCAs.) Now the record playback is quiet.
Below is the TD134 in it's current state.

The most recent change was to replace the Ortofon cartridge with a Shure SC35C with an added on metal body. Both cartridges are made for scratch DJs, but choice in low-compliance cartridges isn't vert good. The Ortofon is more exciting when the music suits it, but in general, the Shure is a lot smoother and flatter. I think the next improvement would have to be a better arm. I haven't decided yet if I should add another arm or replace the BL104 with a TP14. I have a spare TP14, but I need to find some balls for it.

Leonard

Nice exemple of improvment !
Sure a TP14 will do the job, you will then have something like a 135 ... :)

I saw this moldovia plinth on ebay.
Well it looks good.
Better than the Thorens plinth, I think.

I have the same project, but with a 184 one.
I allready found the 135 platter (with the courtesy of one member here), and I hope to build an arm that could keep the automatic functions.
May be a modified TP13 ... or something from another brand.
Will see.

The way the motor bushing was gone is amazing !

You did a great job with the turntable.
Keep us informed with future modifications ... ;)

May I ask you what kind of oil did you use for motor and platter please ?

- You need balls bearing for the TP14 ?
Not sure if I well understood.
Do you need help to find some ?

PS I saw some concrete tonearm bases on ebay.
That could be an easy and flexible solution to use any arms you could have.
And may be you could do it yourself for free or similar !

Hello Leonard,

Very nice turnatble with the plinth.

A BTD12S would suit your TD134 better than the TP14 ;)

I'm using non-detergent turbine oil for the bearing.

I was thinking about using the TP14 because I already have two. One is used with the 124 when I play 78s, The other is missing some of the loose ball bearings and needs some work before it goes on the 134. I don't know yet if I need more balls. I think I have some, but I need to find them.

The other possibility is to remove the mushrooms and cantilever an SME 3009 Improved onto to the back of the plinth. The SME needs some work too. I need to wait for a quiet rainy or snowy weekend to work on tonearms.

I think the TP14 is a good choice, and you allready have two of them ... so ...

Go for the TP14 !

Ball bearings 7/64" and you need 9 + 9.
